Frequently Asked Questions

How fast do EcoBike electric bikes travel?
EcoBike electric bikes can travel up to 20 mph on motor power alone depending on rider weight and terrain. If the rider is pedaling as well, there is no limit to the speed that can be achieved.
How far can I go on a single charge?
The Vatavio can travel up to 20 miles on a single charge in pedal assist mode. The Elegance and Adventure can travel up to 25 miles on a single charge in pedal assist mode. (Note: These figures are for a 150-pound rider traveling on flat ground, and will vary depending on usage.)
What are "twist grip throttle" and "pedal assist mode"?
The Zero-Smart-Start™ speed controller has three settings. With twist grip throttle, the motor does all the work, and the rider does not pedal at all. Pedal assist mode allows the rider to share the effort with the motor, which kicks on only to help the rider pedal. This is the most efficient mode in which to use EcoBike electric bikes. Finally, manual mode allows the rider to shut off the motor completely and pedal on his or her own, like a traditional bicycle.
How do you charge the battery?
Just like with a laptop, the EcoBike battery charger plugs into any standard wall outlet, and the battery slips into the charger. Whether you are relaxing in a coffee shop, working at the office, or at home for the evening, it's easy to charge up your EcoBike battery. Some customers choose to purchase a second charger to keep at the office for ease of use.
How long does it take to charge the battery completely?
Four to six hours from a complete discharge.
How often should I charge the battery?
For longest life, it is best to charge the battery after each ride (or daily). It should also be charged at least once every three weeks if not in use for a long period of time.
Does the battery recharge while riding?
No. In order to create the energy to recharge the battery, you would need resistance, which would make it harder to pedal and defeat the purpose of having an electric motor.
Can I remove the battery and does it lock?
Yes, the battery is simple to remove when unlocked. The lock for the ignition and the battery are the same.
Will my Ecobike help me ride up hills?
Of course! Both the pedal assist mode and twist grip throttle will assist you while going up moderate inclines.
Do I have to pedal all the time?
No. You may use the twist grip throttle, which requires no pedaling at all. The pedal assist mode allows for significantly more power, however.
What if I need a replacement part?
Replacement parts are readily available from your local EcoBike dealer. If you are not near an EcoBike dealer, there are several online stores that will service you. Please see our dealer locator for more information.
What maintenance is required on an EcoBike?
It is important to take good care of your EcoBike, as you would with any other high quality item. You must keep it clean and dry, and keep your battery charged. You must also take it into a bike shop periodically for tune-ups.
How do I purchase an EcoBike?
Please see our dealers page to find a local reseller of EcoBike electric bikes. If there is not one in your area, several online stores that carry EcoBikes are listed as well.
Are electric bicycles street legal?
